In a land of a billion plus people, Rahman dominates the music industry and there is a little bit of Rahman in the everyday life of almost every Indian. An entire generation of Indians have grown up listening to his music and he is worshipped amongst the youth.
Born in Chennai as Dileep Kumar, he converted to Sufism and became known as Alla Rakha Rahman. His ability lies in fusing different sounds, creating music that grows on you!
His first album Roja (1992) won him the National Award; now after 15 years of churning out chartbusters, 2008 saw the ' Mozart of Madras ' win two Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire.
He has been voted as one of the hundred most influential people in the world by the prestigious TIME magazine! He may be called as the proverbial pied piper from Chennai, who has everyone dancing to his beats!
