Padma was born in Madras, now Chennai (Tamil Nadu) in a Kerala Iyer family before spending most of her adolescent life in the United States. She has been the host of the US reality television program Top Chef since season two. In 2009 she was nominated for an Emmy Award for hosting Top Chef along with Tom Colicchio.
On April 17, 2004, in New York City, Lakshmi married the novelist Salman Rushdie, to whom she was introduced at a party hosted by the journalist and editor Tina Brown. On July 2, 2007, the couple filed for divorce, shortly after Rushdie was granted a knighthood. She is the model for one of the central characters — and love interests — in Rushdie's novel, Fury (a novel dedicated to her as well).
Padma Lakshmi had an enterprising modelling career when she reached a higher level of fame, and criticism, upon marrying Salman Rushdie. Her years hosting the reality cooking show, Top Chef, has increased her popularity in recent years.
In returning perhaps to where she is most comfortable, Padma posed for the cover of Allure magazine recently. Pictured lying in the buff, Padma also reveals to her fans that this is how she feels most comfortable. Padma explains that as a ‘sensual-leaning’ woman, she often sleeps in the nude and feels comfortable so. With a body that most men would claim is perfect, Padma would of course have no problems posing in the nude. Often seen flaunting the huge scar on her right arm, which unfortunately is hidden in the nude pic, Padma is not one to believe that perfection is in hiding one’s blemishes.
